Budget Island Hopper: Interisland Travel

Hey Adventurer! Looks like you’ve got a fun filled packed schedule ahead of you, travelling between the North and South Islands.

We’re also excited to share that our Island Hopper process, now allows you to continue your journey with the same vehicle! Don’t worry about having to unpack and repack, just leave your bags in the vehicle, lock it up and board the ferry.

No Cars available – No Stress

If you see a "no cars available" message, it might just mean you’re unable to take the vehicle across on the ferry at that time — not that we’re fully booked. Try booking a multi-leg trip instead:

  • Pick up and drop off in one island. Then make a separate booking for the other island.  Example of this:
    • Leg #1: Pick up Auckland City and Drop off Wellington Airport
    • Travel across as a foot passenger on the Ferry
    • Leg #2: Pick up Picton Ferry and drop off Queenstown Airport

It’s easy, and you can still explore both islands with us — just with a fresh set of wheels on each side.

Conditions Of Hire

What you need to know if you're travelling across both the North and South Islands with multi-leg reservations.

  • Two reservations are required – one for each Island.
  • Travelling across each Island could be one of two ways:
    • Flying into an Airport with a Budget Location; or,
    • Cross as a foot passenger on the Ferry.
  • A minimum hire period may apply and will be advised at time of booking.
  • One way fees may apply and will be advised at time of booking.
  • A rental can start and finish at any Budget New Zealand location. Subject to availability.
  • It’s your responsibility to book your flights or passenger ferry tickets. Ferry capacity is limited, especially during peak travel periods, so we strongly recommend booking your ferry at the same time as your rental car to avoid missing out. For ferry bookings and information, please refer to InterIslander or Bluebridge.

Kaikoura Drive

Take an easy 2 hour drive down to Kaikoura from Picton to dive with the dolphins and whale watch. A place for marine life lovers, there’s a lot to explore. Take a dip in the ocean with fur seals, jump in a boat (or go by air) and watch life’s largest marine creatures, whales. For the land adventurers, experience all the culture that Kaikoura has to offer by meeting the locals and experiencing their art. Take the opportunity to trek some hiking trails or go 4-wheel driving.

Nelson Tasman Adventure

An alternate 2 and a half hour drive, takes you to to Nelson Tasman, to kayak its hidden bays or follow the walking trail along the coast. There’s three national parks to explore , so if the beach isn’t your style go inland to see the Nelson Lakes set amongst the mountains (you can even stay the night). For some down time and town exploration, check the local art stores, galleries and museums dotted along the town.

Take a coastal walk via the Art Trail and give the soul something to feast on. From local theatres, museums and galleries. Plus, there are other galleries and museums to visit too in Taranaki. Don’t forget to pick up a keepsake of your adventure from one of the vintage stores or from a local artist.
